Fetching Data in Server Components
Server Components are a natural place to retrieve data because they can execute close to backend resources and do not require exposing API credentials to the browser.
A page can directly call a backend service, database abstraction, or external API. This can eliminate unnecessary browser-to-Next.js-to-backend request chains.
For application architecture, distinguish between fetching data for rendering and creating an API for other clients. You do not need to create an API route merely to fetch data inside your own Server Component.
Fetch Data on the Server
export default async function ProductsPage() {
const response = await fetch('[https://example.com/api/products');
](https://example.com/api/products'%29;
) if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error('Failed to load products');
}
const products = await response.json();
return <ProductList products={products} />;
}💡 The server retrieves data before rendering the component.
Key Takeaways
- Fetch render data on the server when possible.
- Avoid creating unnecessary internal API hops.
- Handle failed responses explicitly.
