9. Grounded Generation, Citations, and Abstention

Produce evidence-supported answers, validate citations, handle uncertainty, and resolve temporal conflicts.

Grounded Answering and Claim Support

Grounded generation requires factual claims to be supported by retrieved evidence. A citation at the end is not enough if it does not support the associated claim. Separate direct source statements from synthesis and inference; answer supported parts and identify missing evidence. Model confidence language is not automatically calibrated.

Grounding depends on retrieval, context construction, prompt design, citation validation, and evaluation. Abstention is a correct behavior when the corpus does not support an answer.

Implementation example
{
 "claim":"The trial lasts 30 days",
 "evidence":[{"sourceId":"pricing-policy-v5","chunkId":"pricing-policy-v5:12"}]
}
💡 A claim-to-evidence map can support citation checks; the application should verify source IDs.
Key Takeaways
  • Inspect the relevant pipeline stage instead of guessing.
  • Preserve source provenance, versions, and access scope.
  • Measure quality on representative queries.

What makes an answer grounded?

Citation Design and Validation

Citations should point to stable source IDs and meaningful locations such as page, section, paragraph, URL, or record ID. Preserve citation metadata through retrieval and generation. Never allow the model to fabricate URLs or source IDs. Validate that each citation exists in the authorized retrieved set and supports the claim.

Citation style may be inline markers, footnotes, or source cards. The reference must be real, accessible, and relevant.

Implementation example
{
 "sourceId":"security-guide",
 "chunkId":"security-guide:v2:chunk-8",
 "title":"Security Guide",
 "section":"Token rotation",
 "page":14
}
💡 This metadata supports traceable citations and version-aware source resolution.
Key Takeaways
  • Inspect the relevant pipeline stage instead of guessing.
  • Preserve source provenance, versions, and access scope.
  • Measure quality on representative queries.

What is a reliable citation validation rule?

Abstention and Clarification

A reliable assistant can say it lacks sufficient evidence. It may ask for clarification when the request is ambiguous or escalate when evidence conflicts or the decision is high impact. Retrieval score thresholds can help, but scores are not universal probabilities. Calibrate thresholds on labeled queries and measure false abstentions as well as unsupported answers.

Measure whether the system correctly chooses to answer, clarify, escalate, or abstain.

Implementation example
Adequate + consistent evidence -> answer with citations
Weak or missing evidence -> abstain / clarify
Conflicting evidence -> disclose / escalate
High-impact action -> separate approval policy
💡 Abstention policy should reflect the cost of wrong answers versus unnecessary refusals.
Key Takeaways
  • Inspect the relevant pipeline stage instead of guessing.
  • Preserve source provenance, versions, and access scope.
  • Measure quality on representative queries.

Why is a similarity score not a probability of correctness?

Temporal Knowledge and Conflicting Sources

Store publication time, effective date, supersession status, and ingestion time. A page crawled today can still contain an obsolete policy. For historical questions, an older version may be correct; for current questions, use effective dates and authority rules. If conflict cannot be resolved, disclose it rather than blending rules into a false answer.

Implementation example
{
 "publishedAt":"2026-09-15",
 "effectiveFrom":"2026-10-01",
 "supersededAt":null,
 "ingestedAt":"2026-10-28T08:00:00Z"
}
💡 These timestamps answer different questions; ingestion time is not the same as policy applicability.
Key Takeaways
  • Inspect the relevant pipeline stage instead of guessing.
  • Preserve source provenance, versions, and access scope.
  • Measure quality on representative queries.
