Sass Installation, Configuration, and Tooling
Install Dart Sass, compile SCSS from the command line, configure npm scripts, and understand the Sass workflow in modern JavaScript applications.
Install Dart Sass
Dart Sass is the primary implementation of Sass. It can be installed as a command-line tool or as a project dependency through npm.
For JavaScript projects, installing Sass locally makes the compiler version part of the project's dependency configuration. Team members and CI pipelines can then use the same declared dependency version.
A typical project can keep source files under src/scss and generated files under public/css. Other directory structures are equally valid as long as the build configuration references the correct paths.
After installation, the sass executable becomes available through npm scripts or package-manager execution tools.

On Windows, create the directories using File Explorer or the appropriate PowerShell commands.Which npm package is the standard choice for compiling Sass in a modern JavaScript project?
Compile SCSS Using the Sass CLI
The Sass command-line interface accepts source and destination paths. The source may be a single SCSS file or a directory of Sass files.
The basic form is sass input.scss output.css. You can also compile a directory recursively using sass src/scss:public/css, allowing Sass to generate CSS for stylesheet entry points in the source directory.
Common options include:
--watch: Recompile when source files change.--style=expanded: Produce readable CSS with expanded formatting.--style=compressed: Minify the generated CSS.--no-source-map: Disable source-map generation.
Directory compilation does not mean every file is necessarily intended to be a standalone stylesheet. Partial files and entry points should be organized carefully to avoid emitting unnecessary CSS files.
Keep the watcher running while editing SCSS. For production, use a reproducible build command rather than relying on a manually running watcher.
npx sass src/scss/main.scss public/css/main.css
npx sass --watch src/scss:public/css
npx sass --style=compressed src/scss/main.scss public/css/main.min.css
npx sass --no-source-map src/scss/main.scss public/css/main.cssWhich CLI option automatically recompiles Sass files when they change?
Configure npm Scripts and Build Workflows
Npm scripts provide consistent commands for compiling Sass locally and in CI. Rather than remembering a long terminal command, developers can use descriptive scripts such as dev:css and build:css.
A project may also combine Sass compilation with JavaScript bundling, linting, tests, and production asset generation. Sass can be used independently or integrated into tools such as Vite and Webpack.
Keep generated CSS and source SCSS conceptually separate. Depending on the repository's build process, generated CSS may be ignored by version control or committed when the deployment workflow explicitly requires it.

- Keep Sass as a declared project dependency.
- Integrate Sass into the existing build system when appropriate.
- Validate generated output in CI rather than relying only on local compilation.
