GraphQL Monolith vs Federation

A single GraphQL server is often the simplest architecture for a small or medium-sized product. It keeps schema composition, debugging, deployment, and local development relatively straightforward.

Federation becomes attractive when independent teams need autonomous ownership and deployment of domain areas. However, federation introduces distributed execution, network dependencies, schema governance, and additional operational complexity.

The correct choice depends on organizational and technical constraints rather than the size of the schema alone.
